JLA Architects Expands Interior Design Team With the Addition of Calamity Mulliken

MILWAUKEE  — JLA Architects is proud to announce that Calamity (Callie) Mulliken (NCIDQ, ASID, WRID) has joined our Milwaukee office. As an interior designer at JLA, she will work collaboratively with our clients, consultants, and project teams to provide interior design services to clients on a variety of project types & sizes. Callie brings over ten years of experience in a variety of market sectors, including education, corporate and hospitality spaces.

“Callie approaches each project as a challenge and opportunity to leverage both her creative and analytical sides, to uncover a client’s vision and make it a reality. Her positive attitude and passion for the industry makes her a great addition to our interiors team,” explains Vice President & Milwaukee Office Director Steve Wagner.

When asked why she chose JLA, Callie explained: “It was the culture and the people! I’ve enjoyed meeting everyone at JLA’s offices and I look forward to working at such a reputable company with strong core values.”

Mulliken holds a Bachelor of Science – Interior Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She’s a member of the American Society of Interior Designers’ (ASID) Wisconsin Chapter and currently serves as chair of their Sustainability Committee.

We sat down with Callie to ask what led her to architecture and what some of her favorite Milwaukee nonprofits are —

What drew you to interiors as a career?

“I love the creativeness and complexity that lives within the field of interior design and architecture.  I have always been drawn to anything to let my creativity fly and with interior design I also get to utilize my analytical skills, too. It’s the best of both worlds!”

What’s your favorite (or most unique) project you’ve worked on and why?

“Favorite project: In 2021, a credit union I had the privilege to design, won an interior design award from ASID Wisconsin.  It was such a fun project and in the end all the hard work and teamwork really paid off.

Most unique project: Early on in my career, I had the opportunity to work at an aquatic design firm, working on pools and waterpark projects around the world.”

What do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

“I really enjoy anything creative or being outdoors.  Traveling is always another favorite but if I can’t go far, mini adventures keep me happy too.”

Are you involved in the community? If so, what causes/organizations mean the most to you?

“I am on the ASID-WI Sustainability Committee and each year we volunteer with the Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Clean-up.”
