Overview
General Capital Group LLP & EMEM Group broke ground in the Spring of 2023 on the redevelopment of the current Milwaukee Public Library’s King Drive branch with a new mixed-use development including the library and affordable housing.
Originally built in 1971, the current library was part of a generation of one-story libraries whose mechanical systems were failing. The new library will include geothermal and include three stories of apartments above.
The greater development includes two other buildings, including the former Garfield Theatre. The theatre’s exterior façade will be saved and restored along with its trademark marquee.
In an effort to bring more affordable housing options to the neighborhood, 20% of the units will be prioritized for people currently living in the area. In addition, units will be set aside for those in need of supportive housing as well as veterans.
