About the Project

The Center for Black Excellence & Culture is a transformational cultural education and economic center intended to realize African American excellence embedded in the Greater Madison community. By creating a space focused on building the multi-generational strengths of the region’s African Americans, The Center will tap into African American proliferate culture and history while developing leadership throughout the region through education. The design of the development revolves around the Black Aesthetic incorporating elements of drama, “will to adorn” and asymmetry. Specifically, a theme of resiliency will be reflected in the architecture.
“The Center was designed to celebrate and encompass the black aesthetic both through the architecture and design and in its programming. We hope to create a collective space that will come alive with culture, history, and enrichment for the region.“ explains Rafeeq Asad of JLA.
JLA has partnered with the organization & the greater community throughout the programming and workshop phases up through its current design development as the organization embarks on its capital funding campaign.
